Sincerely we invite you to the above meeting, which will take place in the House of Europe (see: http://www.huisvaneuropa.eu ), Korte Vijverberg 5/6 The Hague. We thank the House of Europe for the provision of the space and hospitality.

Although not so long ago the European Union has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Union since then has been confronted with big challenges as the economic and refugee crises, rising nationalism, movements promoting even to leave the EU, the spread of criminal and terrorist networks in Europe, serious conflicts near the European borders and the decline in US influence around Europe. Not to lose what has been achieved and to revitalize European Union cooperation is a very serious matter for the survival of the EU. The purpose of this meeting is to reflect about the present situation and to contribute to revitalising the Road to Peace and Prosperity in Europe and encourage Europe to be more meaningful for peace in the world.

The meeting has an informative character and the program is as follows:

13:00 Reception

13.30 Opening by dr. M.K. Gautam, emeritus professor in cultural anthropology at the University of Leiden

13.45 Short Introduction about the “Huis van Europa”

14.00 Theme: After the Dutch Presidency, the British Referendum and in view of other Challenges: Is there a Need for a new EU Narrative?

Moderator
Prof. dr. J. de Zwaan.

Jaap de Zwaan is a Professor of European Union Law at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and Lector European Integration at the The Hague University for Applied Sciences. He has been working for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague (European Integration Department and Legal Service) as well as in Brussels (Permanent Representation of the Netherlands at the EU). From 2005 to 2011 he was Director of the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’. As from May 2012 he is appointed Lector European Integration at the The Hague University for Applied Sciences.

Speakers who will highlight the theme are:
Dr. M. Krijtenburg

Margriet Krijtenburg wrote a dissertation on “Schuman’s Europe: His frame of reference”. The book explores the original vision of a unified Europe by Robert Schuman – how his thoughts, personality, religious background as a practicing catholic and his origin from the region of Alsace-Lorraine all came together in his vision of European unification. Schuman considered the European spiritual and cultural heritage to be the “raison d’être”of European integration, which should happen in small steps, safeguarding national interests as much as possible, provided that they did not go against common European interests. Margriet Krijtenburg will speak about how Schuman’s vision provides a refreshing view on current European society, an insight in the cause of the problems the EU is now facing and a frame of reference for solutions.

Dr. W. van Eekelen.

Wim van Eekelen joined the Netherlands Foreign Service in 1957 and served in New Delhi, London, Accra, Paris and Brussels NATO and became State Secretary for Defense, State Secretary for European Affairs and Minister of Defense. In 1989 he became Secretary General of the Western European Union. Now he is a member of the Netherlands Advisory Commission on European Integration. His remarks will touch upon some very important steps in the development of the EU, where various difficulties have been overcome, asking the question whether the present state of the EU needs a new narrative.

Prof. Dr. J. Voorhoeve

Joris Voorhoeve is a scientist (tropical agriculture and political science), Dutch politician, former minister and university professor. He has been the leader of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy between 1986 and 1990, served as the Dutch Minister of Defense between 1994 and 1998 and was a member of the Dutch Council of State. Since the beginning of this year professor Voorhoeve is lector of the research group International Peace, Justice and Security at the “Haagse Hogeschool”. He will speak about EU Peace and Security in the light of the theme and international developments.

Mr. J. Corley.

Jack Corley is president of the European Unification Movement. For a considerable time he has been active in Russia and China in projects of character education and teaching about the importance of living for higher goals as the wellbeing of the community, nation and world in order to create a peaceful world. His topic is: how to inspire European citizens, especially young men and women, to see the project of the EU as meaningful and to be willing to support it.

Over ware liefde:
